I practiced in Northwest Indiana from 1977 to 1994. For most of that time, I had stacks of charts on my desk everyday and the more patients I saw, the worse it got. I knew there was a better way – and eventually, I found it.

I figured if you could store patient information electronically, then it could be reformatted to create usable reports. So I hired a programmer and he went to work. Several weeks to a month later, he showed up in my office with something that didn’t make any sense to me. He tried, but we simply were not “on the same page”. So a couple of months down the road, I was introduced to a lady who was an accomplished programmer and gave her the same task. Again, about a month later she showed me her version of what the other guy showed me.

Then one day, back in 1990, I was telling a patient of mine about my idea and he suggested a simple program that would merge data with letter type documents. That day I purchased the program and went to work on my own. I began to sort out exactly what information I would get during a patient encounter and then draw on this data when developing my notes. As primitive as it was, it all started to come together.

I am not a programmer, so the system I was developing was clumsy to use. The reports needed a fair amount of editing and getting the data in the system was slow. So I did what any good doctor would do; I enlisted my staff to help. I would jot down my notes on a specially developed worksheet and my staff would use the worksheet to enter the data into the system. Little by little, we got a system down that virtually eliminated the need for dictation.

Over that past 18 years, I have dedicated my life to streamlining the data entry and perfecting a wide variety of reports; hence the birth of SonoSoft. Today, with the help of an extremely talented and intelligent staff, we have developed systems unlike others.
